External research involving human subjects at Mott Community College must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the President. Some research that involves students and employees, although conducted by internal employees, may need IRB approval. Employees shall not access College data for personal use, i.e., for any reason not covered by FERPA’s Legitimate Educational Interest (LEI) clause, without appropriate permissions. The Principal Investigator will submit the Institutional Review Board (IRB) application with all applicable attachments to the Executive Director of Institutional Research & Decision Support (IRDS).

  1. No research shall begin until a final approved application is returned to the Principal Investigator.
  2. The Executive Director will convene an Institutional Review Board to review applications as they are received. The board shall consist of the Executive Director, one additional staff member, and one faculty member from a department/division related to the proposed research.
  3. For research involving students, faculty, and/or staff, the respective Executive Cabinet member must also review and approve the application.
    • Students: Vice President of Student Academic Success must approve.
    • Faculty: Vice President of Student Academic Success must approve.
    • Employees: Associate Vice President of Human Resources must approve.
  4. The Institutional Review Board will make a recommendation to the President, who has the final approval.
  5. If approved by the President, the Executive Director will communicate the approval in writing to the Principal Investigator.
  6. An IRB approval means that the research proposal has been reviewed and that the research may be conducted at Mott Community College in accordance with all protocols and provisions set forth by the PI in the IRB application.
  7. An IRB approval is not an endorsement by Mott Community College of the study nor the concepts explored in the research project.
  8. All research must comply with MCC policies and procedures and adhere to all federal and state requirements..
  9. Research will be performed in a manner that will assure complete safety and beneficence to all MCC faculty, staff, students, visitors and other research participants.
